{Group 7} Temperature

TEMPERATURE.

In Science, perhaps the most important instrument used for measuring temperature in experiments is the lab thermometer. Other instruments used when measuring temperatures are infrared thermometers, thermocouples and digital thermometers.

~ What is the SI Unit for temperature?

The SI unit for temperature is Kelvin (K). However, most thermometers measure temperature on the Celsius scale for practical reasons.

--- Lab thermometers

A lab thermometer measures temperatures in degrees Fahrenheit (F) or degrees Celsius (°C). Lab thermometers contain water, mercury or red alcohol in it. The liquid's volume changes relative to its temperature.

~ How accurate is the lab thermometer?

It can measure temperatures between -10°C to 110°C.

~ How do you use the lab thermometer?

We have created a video on how to use the thermometer. (Everything in the video was carried out in the science laboratory.)

We apologise if it is unclear or quite hard to read.

NOTE: In case the subtitles are not clear, here is the typed-out version of it.

Always make sure your eyes are at the same level as the bottom of the meniscus to avoid parallax error!

~ When do you use the lab thermometer?

Lab thermometers are used when you need to measure temperature or temperature changes.

--- Digital thermometers (measures 35.5°C to 41.1°C)

~ How do you use a digital thermometer?

There is always one button on the digital thermometer. Press it and place it at the surface of the place you want to measure. When the temperature is measured, a beep will sound, and the temperature of the surface you measured will be displayed on the thermometer's screen.

~ When do you use a digital thermometer?

You use it to measure body temperatures, or sometimes atmospheric temperature (will not be guranteed to be accurate).

--- Infrared thermometers, aka IR thermometers (measures -55°C to 280°C)

~ How do you use an IR thermometer?

To use it, aim the instrument, pull its trigger and read the temperature that will be displayed on its screen.

~ When do you use the IR thermometer?

IR thermometers measure the infrared energy naturally emitted from all objects.
