Group 5's Science Blog on Mass!!!!

What is Mass??
Mass is the amount of matter in an object or substance.

The S.I unit for Mass is KG! Other commonly use units are g (grams),mg(milligrams) and t(tonnes)!

How do you find Mass?
The equation to find mass is density divided by volume, but a shorter way to find mass is to weigh the object with either a Beam Balance or a Weighing Scale.

This is an Electronic Weighing Scale which we will also tell you more about and how to use it later.

This is a Beam Balance which we will tell you how to use
and more about it later.

Most people would assume that mass and weight are the same, well , they are absolutely wrong.
The differrence between mass and weight is that the mass of an object cannot change while weight of an object can depending on the amount of gravity acting on it.

So now we will be teaching you how to use a Beam Balance and Electronic Weighing Scale.
First we will be talking about Beam Balance.

The Student's Guide To Using A Beam Balance and electronic weighing scale.

(Beam Balance)

  1. Place the object that you want to weigh onto the circular platform on the beam balance.

  2. You will then observe that the opposite side of the circular platform of the beam balance is moving up and down freely because it is unbalanced with your object.

  3. You will also see that there are weights between the circular platform and the opposite side.

  4. Then you will need to shift the weights to the markings that balances to your object.

  5. When your object is balanced with the weights, take note of the markings that the weights are on.(if needed, add up the weights)

So that's how you use the beam balance.

More about the beam balance:

The beam balance is an accurate and reliable method of measuring mass. Most triple beam balances can measure up to 0.61kg.

(Electronic Weighing Scale)

  1. Press the 'on' button on the weighing scale to turn it on.

  2. Place the object on the weighing scale.

  3. You have to wait for the weighing scale to reach to an exact number.

  4. When you have the exact reading, you can take it down and press the 'off' button to turn it off.

More about the Electronic Weighing Scale:

One advantage that the electronic weighing scale has over the beam balance is that it does not take so long to get an exact reading. Also, it can measure up to 2 decimal places.

Now we finished telling about what is Mass and how to use a Beam Balance and Electronic Weighing Scale. We hope you enjoy our blog! Thank You....
